Berndt Friberg Large Bowl
Berndt Friberg's ceramics for Gustavsberg are some of the finest examples of wheel-thrown pottery of the 20th century. His stunning portfolio of work is characterised by intricate glazes, exquisite forms, and an unsurpassed level of skill & craftpersonship.
This large bowl was handmade by Friberg in 1970, and features a complex glaze of aubergine and turquoise. The turquoise colour is water-like and vibrant, whilst the aubergine glaze is highly nuanced with areas of cobalt blue & a subtle iridescence. The two colours blend and merge around the exterior of the piece in dramatically feathered areas of high contrast.
The bowl's interior is deep aubergine and features delicately speckled areas and pools of bright blue. Towards the rim, the dark purple colour joins the turquoise glaze with a stunning degradé effect.
The bowl's elegant form is substantial yet delicate. The proportions and narrow foot are unmistakingly Friberg, whilst the bowl's thin walls display his skill as a ceramicist. This piece has been gently paddled to create a softly square rim; an unusual technique Friberg applied to both vases and bowls.
