Berndt Friberg Turquoise Paddled Vase
Berndt Friberg's ceramics for Gustavsberg are some of the finest examples of wheel-thrown pottery of the 20th century. His stunning portfolio of work is characterised by intricate glazes, exquisite forms, and an unsurpassed level of skill & craftpersonship.
This miniature vase was handmade by Friberg in 1972. The piece is beautifully glazed with a turquoise-green, and features boldly speckled inclusions of deep oxblood red. The glossy turquoise colour is gently varied, featuring delicate, subtle areas of yellows and blues. The unusual glaze is both water-like and earthy.
The exquisitely proportioned object features a fluted neck, and has been paddled on four sides to form a gentle quadratic shape. The vase's elegant form, along with the glaze, takes inspiration from ancient ceramics from the Song Dynasty.
