Carl-Harry Stålhane 'SAF' Haresfur Vase
A haresfur 'SAF' vase designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane for Rörstrand, Sweden, C. 1955.
Stålhane's 'Alphabet' vases were produced by Rörstrand during the 1950's and 60's. These highly collectable ceramics are named 'Alphabet' due to the three-letter system that identifies each shape. This vase, known simply as 'SAF', features a distinctive & highly tactile spherical body with a long, narrow neck.
This exquisite example features a haresfur glaze for which Rörstrand became well-known. This intricate glaze has delicate areas of mottled depth which resemble the fur of a rabbit or hare. On this piece, the green glaze pools around the base of the neck, creating a ring of copper-orange. This merges boldly with contrasting colours of white, grey, and blue.
The Rörstrand factory are not only revered for their exciting glazes & elegant shapes. They pioneered the style of Sweden's Modernist ceramics during the 1950's, and made a significant impression on the prevailing aesthetics of the Mid-20th Century Scandinavian home.
