Classically Inspired Finnish Pewter Wall Sconce
A unique wall sconce, handcrafted from pewter in Finland, circa 1940.
Although a humbly made object, this sconce, for one candle, has clearly been made with love, perhaps by a young student, for a family member or a romantic interest.
The simple yet classically inspired concave form of the main body is reminiscent of a rhombus shaped cephalopod, like a diamond squid.
Contrasting the in turning edges, the fluid diamond shape is repeated in the centre of the backplate, concentrically and convex.
Two further decorative details embellish the piece concentrically, a series of small circles that border the convex centre, and a zigzag pattern around the outer edge.
Under candlelight, the above elements create stunning light effects, a mesmerising interplay of shadows and radiance.
The candle holder & drip tray, and the arm which extend these from the backplate have been left undecorated, and all over the pewter boasts an even and rich patina.
