Erik Höglund Pine Candlestick
A pine candlestick by Erik Höglund for Boda Trä, Sweden, circa 1963.
Erik Höglund is best known as a key figure in the success of Swedish glass during the mid-20th century. His design output was not limited to glass, however, and the popularity of his designs in wood lead Boda glassworks to expand the company in the early 1960's to include a woodworks, Boda Trä.
The workshop utilised the strong traditions of woodworking in the village, employing local craftspeople and using local Swedish timber rather than importing fashionable teak from abroad.
The undulating form of this modernist pine candlestick greatly exaggerates the curves and tapers of traditional candlesticks. The object's distinctive shape creates a striking silhouette, whilst echoing some of Höglund's earlier works in glass.
The wooden candlestick features a metal holder in which to place a candle.
