Fluted Pair of Tre Kronor Inspired Brass Wall Sconces
An incredibly charming nonmatching pair of wall sconces, handcrafted in brass by Carl Malmstedt of Ängelholm, Sweden, in 1932 & 1933.
The shape of each main body, tapering outwards towards the scalloped top, is reminiscent of a three-pronged crown. Presumably, this is a subtle patriotic nod, as the Three Crowns (tre kronor) adopted as the national emblem of Sweden have three spikes.
Additionally, the outline, form and decoration on the sconces have been designed to achieve stunning light effects when illuminated by candlelight.
For example, a hammered finish features in a band at the top of the sconces, and on the drip trays. Delicate lines are chased around the edges of the backplates, and the backplates are fluted.
Combined, these details create a mesmerising interplay of shadows and radiance. In daylight the sleekly shaped wall decorations remain attractive as the brass now boasts an even and rich patina.
