Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg Dish
A porcelain dish by Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg, produced at Arabia, Finland, circa 1955.
This highly decorative porcelain dish has been glazed with a vibrant cobalt blue, which lightens towards the rim in varied hues of turquoise. The intense blue colour is predominantly matte, but a pool of glass-like gloss forms towards the centre of the piece. A dark brown glaze has been applied to the underside of the dish. Although uniform in colour, the brown glaze has visible brushstrokes which contributes to the handmade character of this object.
This delightful piece was gifted by Arabia as a 'factory visit' souvenir during the mid-1950's.
Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg worked at Arabia between 1924 and 1970. She was greatly influneced by Chinese ceramics, and her most famous work includes the 'Rice' series of tableware which was produced in great quantity. In the latter half of her career, Holder-Kjellberg began experimenting with glazes in Arabia's art studio. Unique pieces from this period are highly collectable.
