GAB Tenn Swedish Grace Pewter Candlesticks
A pair of sleek pewter candlesticks by the prominent Swedish maker GAB Tenn (Guldsmedsaktiebolaget or Guldsmeds AB).
Although produced in the mid-20th century, stylistically these candle holders exemplify the refined elegance of the Swedish Grace movement. Sweden’s romantic national style which occurred, all too briefly, during the 1920s and early 1930s.
Often described as a more restrained version of Art Deco, Swedish Grace emphasized craftspersonship by combining Modernist motifs and clean lines with understated ornamentation inspired by classicism.
These delicately proportioned candlesticks feature a silver-coloured pewter surface with a soft, subtle sheen. The form is both simple and sophisticated, with a gracefully tapered stem that flares out at the base as well as more gently at the top. Incorporating a step, the base has a slight geometric detail, which is repeated on the stem in the form of incised lines or bands. The sconce that accommodates the candle sits atop the stem like a stand-alone trophy or flared vase. This dramatic shape functions as a drip tray, reflecting the style's focus on functionality as well as beauty.
Overall, the design of these GAB Tenn pewter candlestick speaks to the restrained luxury of Swedish Grace, combining modern sensibilities with classical influences for a usable Scandinavian design with long lasting appeal.
