Gunnar Nylund 'Ritzi' Vases
A pair of handled 'Ritzi' vases, designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, Sweden, C. 1960.
Rörstrand's elegant designs had a significant impact on the aesthetics of the Scandinavian 20th Century home. With an art direction largely focussed on the beauty of pure, simple forms with delicate & often naturalistic glazes, their designers greatly influenced Sweden's Modernist movement during the golden age of Scandinavian design.
This pair of handled vases belongs to Gunnar Nylund's 'Ritzi' series, which consisted of vases and bowls with an underglaze ribbed pattern. The collection was available in a handful of complimentary transparent glazes. In this duo, the larger vase features a refined olive green glaze, whilst the smaller is a striking cobalt blue.
The moulded vases feature exaggerated tall & elegant proportions that perfectly illustrate the understated Modernist style of Rörstrand's production. The forms are tapered, and both feature a small, neat handle which further contributes to the duo's visual balance and undeniable aesthetic appeal.
