Gunnar Nylund 'Strange Fruit' Dish
An unusual fruit shaped bowl designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, Sweden, in the 1940s.
The fruit depicted could be a peach as the shape is both bulbous and tapers towards the end. However, strikingly, it is bright blue in colour. The mottled glaze, whose composition is reminiscent of fruit skin, also contains hues of purple.
This is a brilliantly quirky example of Nylund's work which also displays the attributes for which he is most renown. Namely, a sculptural form, matte glaze and innovative colours.
