Gunnar Nylund Trio of Vessels
A brilliant trio of ceramic vessels designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, Sweden, circa 1960.
Like many of the most esteemed ceramic pieces from mid-20th century Sweden, this trio take inspiration from ancient East-Asian decorative arts. Both the satisfyingly ethereal shapes and exquisitely rich and nuanced glaze are reinterpretations of ancient forms & finishes.
This set comprises of two bottle shaped vases and an angular bowl. The tallest bottle features a long-tapered neck with a flared mouth and can best be described as mallet shaped. The shorter bottle is reminiscent of a sake flask with its high shoulder and short neck but the same flared mouth. The small bowl with its low angular walls is similar to a Hiragata bowl (otherwise known as a flat shape tea bowl or a summer tea bowl).
All three pieces are expertly decorated in a shiny hares fur glaze that captures an abundance of blue hues.
