Gunnar Nylund Unique Flambé Fisherman Vase
A unique Flambé vase by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, Sweden, circa 1937.
Nylund launched the Flambé range in 1932. In this series, Art Deco and Neoclassical forms were hand decorated with intricate scenes and motifs, often featuring fish or animals. New designs were added to the series until 1945 when Rörstrand ceased production of the range.
Each piece is hand decorated, with a decorator's name written on the base. Some early examples were decorated by a young Carl-Harry Stålhane, who would later become a key designer at Rörstrand and a notable figure of Scandinavian design.
Some items from Nylund's Flambé series are unique, such as this vase.
On this piece, a fisherman empties a day's catch onto a large mat, attracting a group of seagulls. The kneeling figure holds a pair of fish in his hand, whilst a sun beams down behind him. The evocative scenario is stylised in an Art Deco fashion.
This piece was hand decorated by Gull Weinberg, and has the unique design number 2012. Weinberg worked for Rörstrand between 1935-1938.
