A carved staved teak salt and pepper mill, reminiscent of stacked drums or barrels, designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk and produced in Denmark. Quistgaard designed his eminently collectable series of combination salt shaker pepper mills between the late 1950's and early 1960's.

Like most of the mills in Quistgaard's circa 60 piece collection, this design holds salt in the top whilst the lower half grinds pepper. The round, squat design functions fantastically but it is also a very sculptural piece. Satisfying both these criteria was crucial for Quistgaard.

Interestingly, this mill is an example from a batch that had been stamped with misspelt branding; the mark reads "Dansk Desings" rather than "Designs" - a quirk which is well known.

As mentioned on the incredibly informative website, quistgaardpepper.comThe Philadelphia Museum of Art states that this mill was designed in 1972, but this is definitely not the case, as the mill appears in a 1964 Dansk advertisement.
