Jens Quistgaard "Hourglass with Lip" Peppermill
A Jens Quistgaard combination salt and pepper mill with a curvaceous hourglass shaped silhouette. Made by Dansk, this Model Number 890 mill, carved from solid teak, is one of the most ergonomic designs from the series of around 60 pieces.
The mill's two main elements are reminiscent of traditional lathed objects such as doorknobs or finials, but the stacking and flaring of these shapes creates a curvaceous form that's unmistakably grounded in Danish Modernism.
The top section, as with most of Quistgaard's mills, holds salt, where the large button-like stopper is secured by a cork. Peppercorns are stored and ground in the lower half.
The object not only functions fantastically, but it is also a very sculptural piece. Satisfying both these criteria was crucial for Quistgaard.
In Stig Guldberg's 2010 documentary on Quistgaard the latter proclaims: "The finished product must display harmony but its usefulness must not be affected just for the sake of making it pretty. Practical use and beauty of design must go hand in hand."
