Jens Quistgaard Large Oval Bowl
A large oblong shaped teak bowl designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs, circa 1965.
The oval shape of this bowl and its angled walls, which gently splay outwards towards the top, are typical of Quistgaard’s work. The form has a boldness and confidence and wholeheartedly presents as Modern. Yet, this object, like many of the best Scandinavian Modernist designs, also has a familiarity. Perhaps this is because it reminds us of a ‘trug’ or a loaf tin, two designs imbued with humble domesticity.
The bowl functions fantastically as a container for carrying, displaying fruit, or serving large salads, but it is also a very sculptural piece. Satisfying both these criteria was crucial for Quistgaard who trained as a sculptor but learnt wood carving at an early age. The staved construction of this bowl and many of his other designs was inspired by his study of the wooden hulls of Viking ships.
