Jens Quistgaard "Short Hourglass" Pepper Mill
A rare model 822 combination salt and pepper mill by Jens Quistgaard. An efficient mid-20th century all-in-one cruet set with an appealing stout yet curvaceous hourglass silhouette.
Crafted from solid teak, this pepper mill is part of Quistgaard’s highly collectible series of approximately 60 mills created for Dansk Designs Ltd, from the late-1950s.
The mill's distinctive squat shape features two flattened globes connected by a narrow neck. Poking out from the top of the mill is its graceful tapering peg stopper. Overall, the form is reminiscent of a half-eaten apple and how the object has been carved brilliantly showcases the natural beauty of the teak wood, with its rich, warm tones and intricate grain patterns.
As with most of Quistgaard's mills, salt is loaded and shook from the top section. Whilst peppercorns are stored and ground in the lower half. Standing at only 12 cm, this is one of the smallest designs in the Dansk mill series. However, proving that size isn’t everything, it is also one of the rarest regards Dansk’s production in teak. Indeed, after years of on-going observation, we do not believe this model was retailed outside of the USA.
