Jens Quistgaard "Trivet" Candle Holder
Jens Quistgaard designed an extensive series of unconventional cast iron candle holders in the early 1960's. The holders, produced in Denmark for Dansk Designs, were not only conspicuously modernist, but strikingly innovative as the candles themselves were reimagined. Dansk produced, in many colours, extremely tall & thin 'tiny taper' candles from a slow burning, drip-free wax, specifically for Quistgaard's designs. The spectacular candles, designed to burn together in large groups, added visual drama and excitement to fashionable dinner parties across Denmark and the USA during the 1960's and 70's.
The form of this "Trivet" candle holder is essentially a 4x4 grid that stands on four feet. The object's legs are gently tapered in a quintessentially Quistgaard fashion, and extend above the grid structure to form candle sconces. The four sconces are joined by five others, and are arranged in a square pattern. To add further visual interest to this deceptively complex design, each bar making up the grid's structure is turned 45 degrees, creating shadows whilst contributing to the object's tactility.
Quistgaard's large collection of candle holders consists of around 40 models, of varying sizes and capacities, with some examples much scarcer than others. This design is rarely seen, but you'll be happy to know that the specific 'tiny taper' candles are widely available.
The candle holder is complete with its original box.
