Kaj Franck 1621 Juice Pitcher w. Cane Handle
A smoke grey coloured model 1621 pitcher with cane wrapped gripping handle, designed by Kaj Franck in 1955, and expertly hand-blown at Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland.
The geometric form of this carafe is satisfying in many ways. The spherical bulbous body is visually exciting, but also aerates wine well. Whilst the straight sided cylindrical neck is also aesthetically pleasing, through surprise, as stands in stark contrast to the sphere below. Of course, the neck is the perfect girth for holding & pouring, and ease of use is enhanced by the rattan that bounds to form a non-slip handle.
Franck was paramount in the development of Finland's modern aesthetic during the mid-20th century. He is best known for his utilitarian wares in glass and ceramics, which exploit both the practicality and beauty of crisp, clean geometry.
The 1621 Cocktail Pitcher is one of Franck's best known designs and it is precisely his utilitarian wares like this that are still influencing product design today, whilst remaining thoroughly modern after 70 years.
