Kaj Franck KF 234 Vase
A substantial indigo blue KF 234 vase, designed in 1955 by Kaj Franck for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland.
The KF 234 is a particularly striking example of Franck's exploration of simple geometric form. The vase opens dramatically from a narrow base into an attractive V-shaped silhouette, its clean diagonal lines giving the object an architectural quality. In this example, the depth and saturation of the indigo blue glass further emphasise the strength of the form.
The richly coloured body narrows into a thick, crystal-clear glass foot. At the base, the coloured glass terminates in a beautifully defined U-shaped curve, allowing the deep blue interior to appear suspended within the clear glass beneath it.
The contrast is particularly effective: an intensely coloured, sharply expanding body seemingly balanced upon a transparent base. Despite the simplicity of its geometry, the KF 234 demonstrates Franck's sophisticated handling of proportion, colour and material, resulting in an exceptionally sculptural piece of Finnish Modernist glass.
