Kaj Franck KF503 Decanter w. Red Stopper
An elegant mallet shaped decanter with a spherical stopper designed by Kaj Franck circa 1960, Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland.
The body of this model KF503 decanter is turn mould blown. Meaning, the piece was 'turned' whilst being blown in the mould to remove any joint lines. Resultantly, the silhouette of this organic yet geometric decanter is very crisp. Matching the purity of the items' shape is the sophisticatedly contrasting red and clear glass used in the stopper and bottle, respectively.
According to 'Universal Forms' (published alongside the exhibition on the life's work of Kaj Franck at the Design Museum, Helsinki), 2011, the KF503 decanter was produced between 1962 & 64. However, this item is hand etched with the date 1961, along with K. Frank Nuutajärvi Notsjö, making it a very early example of this rare design.
