Kaj Franck 'Sargasso' Vase
A footed goblet-shaped vase from the 'Sargasso' series designed by Kaj Franck for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, 1966.
The name for this series relates to the Sargasso Sea. However, as this unique body of water is known for its calmness and clarity, Frank's inspiration was more precisely Sargassum, the genus of seaweed which also characterises the sea.
This brown seaweed has berry-like air bubbles which match the pockets of air trapped in Franck's Sargasso designs, created by soda inclusions. The shape of the vase is turn mould blown, whilst the collared rim is hand-formed.
