A rare model 1615 pitcher designed by Kaj Franck and turned mould blown in sophisticated smoke grey glass by the expert glassmakers at Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland, in 1963.

The expression of this carafe is most akin to Franck's designs from the mid-1950s such as the "Kremlin Kellot", "Kukkopullo", and his water kettles for Arabia. These vessels, like the striking form of this 1615 pitcher, blends shapes from nature with geometry.

In doing this Franck's designs achieve beauty but also practicality. Thanks to the bell-bottomed shape of the lower half of this pitcher a low centre of gravity is obtained, meaning it cannot be overturned easily. Additionally, the bulbous body is also perfect for aerating wine. A cylindrical shape is deployed in the neck of the carafe so a solid grip my be secured. And, as ever, the hand-tooled pouring lip of the pitcher pours flawlessly.

Surprisingly, the model 1615 pitcher was produced for 1963 only. However, with designs precisely like this Franck was pivotal in the development of Finland's modern aesthetic during the mid-20th century. Indeed it is his elegant utilitarian wares that he is best remembered. Not least because they remain a key influence on product design today, whilst themselves remaining thoroughly modern, even after 60 years.
