Kaj Franck Soda Bubble Trio
Three crystal vessels decorated with soda bubbles, designed by Kaj Franck, 1947.
All three pieces are made with thick high quality glass. Soda bubbles fizz up from the bottom, in varying intensities, which highlights the clarity of the glass and the designs' organic forms.
Originally, in the spirit of mid-twentieth century living, these items were intended to be an ashtray, cigarette cup and liquor bottle (smallest to largest). This series is one of Franck's earliest and best known for the Iittala Glassworks, which he had only begun working for a year earlier.
Franck was appointed a designer at Iittala after winning second and third place in a design competition organised by the factory in 1946. He left in 1948 as a grant he was awarded in 1949 took him to Italy to study glassmaking. In 1951 he was made artistic director of Nuutajärvi Notsjö.
