Kaj Franck 'Usva' Vase
This piece was designed by Kaj Franck for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland, in 1951.
Franck was paramount in the development of Finland's modern aesthetic during the mid-20th century. He is best known for his utilitarian wares, most of which are still influencing product design today whilst remaining thoroughly modern after 70 years.
Kaj Franck is less known for his art pieces, such as this vase. The organic shape of this piece encapsulates a Modernist aesthetic whilst being completely considerate to the material, glass; exploiting the material's unique properties in the best way possible. The shape of this vase allows light to be refracted and bounced around the piece, creating rainbows and shadows within. The stunning visual effect is further amplified by the impressive clarity of the glass itself.
