Karl Hagenauer Round Chamberstick
A sleek brass chamberstick designed by Karl Hagenauer, and handmade by Werkstätte Hagenauer, Vienna, Austria, circa 1950.
This brass candle holder is an exemplar of Hagenaur's ethereal sculptural work. Karl Hagenauer's streamlined designs became immensely popular in the 1950's with the growing appreciation for elegance, alongside the fascination with Modernity.
Hagenauer's most sought after work seamlessly blends an Art Deco style expression with a sophisticated softness seen in mid-20th century Modernist design.
Modest in form yet brimming with elegance, this chamberstick has a flowing organic handle and circular base. The base is concave, to act as a drip pan, and features a raised plinth on which the polished brass candle sconce is attached.
The base has been black patinated, a non toxic chemical method championed by all the finest 20th century Viennese metal workshops. For instance, the werkstättes of; Carl Auböck, Herta Baller, and Richard Rohac all greatly exploited the decorative possibilities of black patination.
