Nanny Still 'Kyynel' Bottle
Riihimäen Lasi Oy were the largest glassworks in Finland during the 20th Century, and whilst their designers helped to secure Finland's position as world-leader in glass design, the bulk of the glassworks' mass-production was actually machine-made bottles.
Riihimäki's association as a 'bottle factory' is significant as some of their most loved & collected design objects are artistic renditions of factory 'bottles' - with popular designs from Tynell, Still & Siiroinen having lasting appeal.
Nanny Still's 'Kyynel' (Teardrop) bottle references the glassworks' history with pure elegance. The form consists of geometric shapes; the shoulders are a semicircle whilst the lower half is constructed from rectangles. The geometry is contrasted by the use of softer, more natural shapes which protrude gently from either side of the bottle. The result is a modernist glass object with the appearance of subtlety and refinement.
This bottle-vase was designed in 1973 and produced for only 1 year.
