Nanny Still 'Paraati' Decanter & Four Glasses
A 'Paraati' (Parade) decanter and four glasses, designed by Nanny Still in 1965 for Riihimäen Lasi Oy, Finland.
During the mid-1960's Nanny Still experimented with heavy cased glass, designing robust objects with a bold, weighted form. Designs from this period such as 'Rex', 'Luxus' and 'Paraati' all share a distinctive sturdiness & thickly cased foot.
This decanter & matching glasses belong to Nanny Still's 'Paraati' series of table glassware, cocktail shakers and hooped vases. Each individual 'Paraati' design not only features Still's typically bold & confident geometry, but also the subtle decorative flourishes often associated with her work.
The lower part of this tall decanter is cylindrical, but tapers dramatically at the shoulder to form a cone. The steel-blue coloured glass is in contrast to the ribbed stopper & clear glass base. The decanter's thick base features decorative impressed concentric rings which reflect light. These 'sun rings' are a feature of each item in the 'Paraati' series, and allow the bold & often heavy objects to appear to gracefully 'float' on the table. The rings are echoed in the decanter's hollow stopper, which has been finely crafted by a skilled glassblower.
The four glasses are also cased in clear glass, and are reassuringly heavy in the hand. They each feature the distinctive 'sun rings' whilst their shape reflects the decanter's shouldered form.
