Ole Wanscher 1755 Armchair
A Model 1755 armchair designed by Ole Wanscher for Fritz Hansen, circa 1946.
Like all of Wanscher’s best designs, this chair showcases a harmonious balance of form and function, whilst nodding to history.
The era this design references specifically is the mid-to-late 18th century. Without doubt, the flowing lines and pierced cross slats are referencing ribbon-back chairs by Thomas Chippendale & George Hepplewhite - two of the ‘big three’ English furniture makers of the 18th century.
Although Wanscher’s chair captures the fluidity and grace of Georgian furniture, his less ornate and more streamlined interpretation is fresh and modern, making it suitable for a variety of interior settings from modern apartments to historical homes.
The shape and proportions of the chair, in addition to being sculptural, have been carefully considered for comfort. Namely, the generously wide & deep seat, and a slightly reclining backrest make this chair ergonomically suitable for many body types.
The brand-new Fermoie upholstery of the armchair adds another layer of comfort, with a slender buttoned cushion providing both visual interest and tactile luxury. The cushion has been made from a light sage green cotton canvas.
Crafted from walnut with warm tones and interesting grain patterns, the armchair showcases the natural beauty of wood in its frame.
Overall, the Model 1755 armchair is a testament to Ole Wanscher's design ethos of understated elegance and Fritz Hansen's commitment to quality craftspersonship. Its sophistication and impeccable practicality ensure that it will remain a coveted piece for generations to come.
