Stig Lindberg Unique "Crosshatch" Vase
Stig Lindberg is well-known for the universal appeal of his brightly-illustrated Faience designs of the 1950's; iconic works that feature painted flowers, plants and vibrant characters. The stylistic longevity of his unique works of the 1960's however, which in contrast are raw, textured and earthy, makes them arguably an even greater success - evidenced by their appropriateness for the contemporary interior setting.
The enduring power and appeal of these later works stems not from the fact they were inspired by Nature, but that they exude the idea or essence of Nature. During the 1960's, Lindberg searched deep into the natural world to inform his unique works, creating beautiful Earth-like glazes and organic hand-applied textures and patterns which, like nature, have an everlasting appeal.
This delightful vase, handmade in Gustavsberg's art studio in 1969, captures Lindberg's intrinsic quirkiness whilst perfectly conveying his "natural" aesthetic. Whilst the form and proportions of this piece are exquisite; a rectangular bottle-vase with gently curved corners and a short, narrow neck, the tactility and undeniable appeal of this remarkable piece are strengthened by the application of a hand-incised 'crosshatch' pattern on each of its four sides. This decorative pattern, comparable to the tight scales of a reptile's belly, creates a brilliant texture and contrast whilst greatly enhancing the objects handmade charm. This texture, paired with the brown, yellow-ochre glaze, demonstrates Lindberg's abstract organic expression.
Whilst looking at the natural world is nowhere near a unique or particularly remarkable approach to design - especially during that period of history, it's Lindberg's distinct abstraction of nature which makes his work exceptional. Each unique piece of earthy-brown pottery from this period, such as this vase, not only captures the colours and rusticity of the natural or ancient world, but also relay the charming, eccentric & playful characteristics of the designer himself. Lindberg's highly sought-after array of unique works from this period feature unconventional forms, unexpected patterns, surprising proportions, and whilst the overall style is somewhat relaxed, each piece was imagined and rendered with the upmost elegance, consideration and skill.
