Stig Lindberg Unique "Reptile" Bowl
This unique bowl was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced in the studio of Sweden's foremost ceramics manufacturer, Gustavsberg, in 1970.
The bowl features Lindberg's delightful combination of surface texture and earthy hues; attributes that define his unique works of the 1960's and 70's. During this period, Lindberg drew great inspiration from the natural world, which is reflected in his wonderful designs.
The natural inspiration is plain to see on this distinctive piece, which features an incised 'scales' pattern. This intricate handworked detail, paired with the brown-grey glaze, gives the impression of a reptile's skin. To create this effect in glaze and ceramics is masterly, and highlights Lindberg's ability to infuse playfulness into his creations.
The bowl itself is tactile, tall-sided and elegant, and features a subtle banded rim. The colours of the organic glaze are incredibly varied, displaying iron-rich hues of reddish brown along with black, grey and light green. Lindberg's application of the glaze is seemingly random & chaotic, which only contributes further to the organic nature of the striking design.
Whilst Lindberg's unique works from this period do not rely on the bright colours or characterful illustrations for which he became famous, they retain his distinctive quirkiness in their charming informality.
