Tamara Aladin 1464 Hooped Vase
The most prolific of the three female designers that dominated Riihimäki’s vast output during the 1960’s and 70’s was Tamara Aladin. During her 17 years at the company, Aladin utilised her bold sense of form and colour to design decorative art glass, largely for export collections. Knowing her work was predominantly for the international market, Aladin broke away from the minimal Finnish aesthetic of the 1950’s to draw influence from the bright, new, Pop-Art movement which was still developing during the first part of her career.
This hooped vase is a quintessential example of Tamara Aladin's work, but was produced for one year only, making it a rare example. The deep aubergine colour is in high contrast to the clear base, which itself has been impressed with concentric circles underneath. The shape is undulating, with 'hoops' forming at the waist. The vase tapers into a conical swoop to create a striking silhouette.
