Thorkild Olsen Craqueleur Crab Dish
A hand painted dish by Thorkild Olsen for Royal Copenhagen, Denmark, depicting a stylised fish with golden crab.
Thorkild Olsen developed his distinctive craqueleur glaze in the 1930's at Royal Copenhagen. He is known for his softened & refined interpretation of the Art Deco style which remained popular into the 1950's.
This dish features a striped Art Deco fish, caught in the clutches of a crab. The crab has been painted in gold paint, with details visible when it catches the light. Elements of the fish, and the rim of the piece, are also highlighted in gold.
The overglaze decoration was expertly painted by Nicolai Tidemand. A similarly decorated vase from this range is featured in the V&A collection.
