Timo Sarpaneva 2518 Bottle
A vintage deep-plum-purple coloured glass bottle by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland.
This boldly shaped bottle was designed in 1956 as part of Sarpaneva's 'i' series of fine table glassware for everyday use. The series included several differently shaped and coloured plates, glasses, and carafes, which won him his second Grand Prix at the 1957 Milan Triennale.
This striking turn mould-blown vessel features two straight sided bands, at the base and at the bottle’s shoulder. Linking the two is a cinched waist, who’s curvaceousness is echoed in the tapering neck.
Interestingly, when two of these bottles are placed side-by-side the shape created between produces an altogether new silhouette which also feels highly evocative of mid-century Finnish Modernism.
Impressively, the bottle retains its original 'i' logo sticker which was originally designed by Sarpaneva for the very series that this bottle belongs, 'i'. The logo was later adopted by the company as their main branding and was still in use until Iittala's controversial rebrand in February 2024.
