Unique Art Deco Bird Vase
This item is reserved.
A large unique bird sculpture incorporating a bud vase, handmade in brass in Britain, circa 1930.
The style of the bird is unmistakably Art Deco. The design mixes curved as well as straight lines, but all the shapes created are geometric, rather than natural. Depicting a bird in this way, the design references the visual culture and hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt as well as imagery of the machine age.
Archaeological discoveries in the early 1920s like the excavation of Tutenkhamun's tomb in 1922 fuelled a romantic fascination with ancient histories and triggered a proliferation of Egyptian imagery within contemporary design.
Despite the originality of this design, with its machine aesthetic and strong reference to ancient Egypt, it is also anchored by vernacular British design. Namely, the function of the piece -to hold a small spray of flowers-, and its narrow depth make it akin to Staffordshire figures, aka ‘flatbacks’, designed to stand on a mantlepiece. The beaded edge of the removable bud vase also indicates the maker was most probably a British Victorian.
Originally, the item could have been a pair, as it is customary to display ‘flatbacks’, and we believe the design is unique. The item is skilfully made; therefore, it was most probably gifted by an engineer /metal worker or made for their own home.
