Walter Bosse Cow Toothpick/Candle Holder
A stylish toothpick or candle holder in the form of a cow. This object was designed by Walter Bosse and made in the 1950's by Herta Baller, Vienna, Austria.
This toothpick holder has been modelled in an abstract way, and is one of Bosse's most strikingly modernist designs. The cow's form is sharp and sleek, and her most notable feature is her large, curved horns which have been polished gold. Other features, such as the eyes, ears & udder have been carefully polished too, whilst the main body of the object is patinated black.
The cow's body and legs are simplified & squared, whilst her head is large and round with pointed ears & horns. The head features a large hole, between the horns, in which to place toothpicks or a candle. Bosse's design results in a playful yet elegant useful object.
Walter Bosse is best known for his whimsical 'black-golden' line of patinated brass animals. Early examples, like this, are revered for both their quality of design and manufacture.
