Walter Bosse Hand Bookends
A pair of large 'hand' bookends designed by Walter Bosse and produced by Herta Baller, Austria, in the 1950s.
Walter Bosse is famous for designing a vast array of stylised brass animals, yet one of his most famous and sought-after designs is an elegant hand-shaped ashtray. The enduring appeal of this famous design can also be observed in these bookends, as they skilfully blend function with both elegance and humour.
Although abstract, these Modernist bookends demonstrate Bosse's skill as a sculptor, particularly with their clever use of shadow. The large brass hands feature a polished surface, leaving a stylistic shadow in the negative space. Further, the polished area has been hand-tooled; hammered to create a lightly textured surface. This lends this rare design the tangible sense of a skilfully handmade object.
