A stylised rooster quill/pen holder designed by Walter Bosse for the majolica ceramic workshop of Karlsruhe, Germany, circa 1960.
Although best remembered for his "Black Golden Line" of Modernist brass animals, Bosse began his long design career by producing ceramics. From the 1920's Bosse designed and made distinctive terracotta animals and "grotesques" which were sold through his own gallery, until the 1940's.
In 1953, shortly after his famed collaboration with Viennese metal workshop Baller, Bosse moved to Iserlohn, Germany, where he continued designing in metal. Towards the end of the decade, Bosse submitted designs for the Karlsruhe majolika workshop where he applied his much-loved aesthetic to the medium of ceramics once again. This item dates from this period.
The rooster's sculptural form is superbly characterful. Modelled from two simple conical shapes with applied combs, this Modernist design is abstract yet has a whimsical charm & undeniable warmth. Although this item makes an attractive ornament, it was intended to perform a function; pens, pencils or indeed feathered quills can be stored in the tail.
The rooster features a white craquelure glaze which is typical of the Karlsruhe factory, and adds a depth of visual interest to the piece. His expressive combs have been picked out in a vibrant orange glaze.
